阿卡红珊瑚生物学名称：Corallium japonicum主要生长在台湾-澎湖-日本海一带，早期是日本渔民捕捞，主要颜色是朱红色、赤红色、牛血色，所以日本渔民便简单的以朱红色红珊瑚来称呼它，而日语朱红色的发音是AKA-阿卡，所以久而久之，阿卡红珊瑚便作为这一类红珊瑚的商业俗称一直使用了下来。
阿卡红珊瑚的主要颜色集中在红色到黑红牛血色；光泽在各类红珊瑚里面是最为明亮的，可达到亮玻璃光泽；质地通透，玉质感强，最顶级的甚至有玻璃质感；表面可见平行枝干方向平行排列的，颜色深浅交替的细密纵纹；横截面可见一圈一圈的生长年轮；中心和背后有白心，背后，侧面有气孔。刚捕捞出来的活枝阿卡，带有橙红色中胶层和外皮层残留。
